Tips on Deck Maintenance in the Pacific Northwest

Here in the Pacific Northwest, we love spending time outdoors, despite the persistent drizzle and dampness. And when we're not able to get out on the Sound or up into the mountains, we still keep at our outdoor activities on a more domestic level. On rainy days, barbecues still flame up out on our back decks, where we we hang out with our friends and family despite the weather. It's in large part because of our damp weather that we have to keep up on our deck maintenance to help ensure that it's not becoming home to filmy plant matter, nor is it becoming subject to rot.

It's easy to put off deck maintenance. There's enough to take care of inside our homes and garages that the deck gets put on the backburner. Nonetheless, if we want to keep our outdoor sanctuary in good working order, there are some maintenance tips that we should follow so that it remains a great space to hang out, rain or shine.

Washing

This is a good one to do once the weather seems to have finally kicked into its summertime mode. With our damp climate, it's common for algae to build up on decks over the course of our wet winters and springs. Not only is it unsightly, but it also poses a safety hazard as it is quite slippery. When you go about the washing, you need to take into consideration the kind of material that your deck is made out of. There are deck cleaners that are specific to wood or composite decking. If you have vinyl decking, you can just use warm water with a mild soap. Regardless of what kind of deck you have, keeping it scrubbed is crucial to ensuring that rot doesn't set in.

Sealing

This is one that you can do once your deck has dried following its washing. Even if your deck is constructed out of pressure-treated lumber, it's still susceptible to damage from persistent rainfall. Prior to applying the finish, you'll want to do some light sanding and replace any popped screws. Be sure to apply the sealant in a way that it is equally distributed, and keep in mind that you're better of with two thin coats than one overly thick one.

Preventive care

One way to help keep flora off your deck is to trim all trees and shrubs away from it. This will help to deter mold and mildew.

Repair damaged or split wood

This is one that requires a bit more skill. If you don't feel like your woodworking skills are advanced enough, you can make a call and have a professional decking company come in and take care of it for you.

If you're in need of deck repair, be sure to get in touch with a trusted professional. For deck repair n the Bellevue, WA area, the experts to contact are at Rainier Fencing and Decking at (253) 499-9108. Go ahead and give Rainier a call today!
